Where to Point the Finger Thousands are dying every year because of a growing drug problem in America We can turn our heads but there is no denying that the problem exists today not only in large cities but in our own backyards The question is whether the drugs are the problem or if the prohibition itself is the problem The futile efforts to ban alcohol and tobacco have kept them legal although they kill more people annually than all of the illegal drugs combined The drug problem is destroying families and redirecting billions in tax dollars The hospitals are frequently taking in victims of overdose and drug related crimes The prisons are overflowing with drug law violators and our streets have been taken over by dealers Law enforcement officers are tied up with drug problems when they could otherwise be working on murder and rape cases The list of inherent drug problems goes on and on but are we fighting them in the correct manner It costs more than 30 thousand dollars a year to house each prisoner Multiply that by the 15 million drug offenders in prison right now and we are spending more than 45 billion dollars Most of these criminals were non-violent working citizens paying taxes and contributing to the economy The US Treasury estimates that America spends more than 105 billion dollars per year fighting a war that can never be won These numbers show a huge financial burden on our economy that has deprived educational environmental and medical departments to name just a few So what can we do The eradication of this problem from our country is impossible without declaring martial law and substantially increasing border patrol The current system is apparently not working and the legalization of drugs sounds ridiculous but is it Lets look first at some of the major side effects of legalizing drugs Most Americans are not doing drugs
