Ghandi Gandhi was a man who put all his personal interests and needs on the line for his people and country Ghandis campaign began in South Africa with his defense of the civil rights of Indians who were living in South Africa After the success of the African campaign Ghandi returned home to fight the British Empire for treating the Indians as second class citizens Ghandi decided that India must be free But unlike many revolutionists Ghandi took the path of non-cooperation and non-violence to accomplish his goals Ghandi believed that punishment of men should be left to god Since we were all such sinners we had no right to judge another man for his actions Ghandis campaigns for freedom and equal rights began in South Africa He did not believe that the English were treating the people fairly so he fought for the independence of South Africa After a long hard battle the people finally received equal treatment During his years in South Africa Ghandi also worked on behalf of the untouchables or Harijans he detested poverty and that is why he wanted the English to withdraw from India They were living in luxury and making the Indians live in poverty Poverty is the worst form of violence Ghandi Ghandi always made the abolition of untouchability one of his major concerns Ghandi stayed with the Harijans while travelling and conducted campaigns to improve their situation At the age of forty-five Ghandi returned to India to help in its struggle to secure independence from oppressive British rule With help from members of Indias congress Ghandi began his campaign to the British to withdraw from India Ghandis plan was simple through non-cooperation and non-violent means Ghandi and his followers would make the British realize that they could no longer control India as they once had Even though Ghandi and his close followers always followed the Hindu principles of non-violence some Indians
