German novelist Erich Paul Remark who later in 1923 became known as Erich Maria Remarque was born on June 22 1898 in Osnabruck He became famous after writing the novel All Quiet on the Western Front one of the best-known anti-war novels ever He went on to write more successful novels but none compared to his first big success For his writings between the time of 1914 and 1945 Erich Maria Remarque is still seen as one of the most honest and convincing writers Erich Maria Remarque was born to Anna Marie Kramer and bookbinder Peter Maria Kramer in 1898 He grew up in a lower middle-class family Erich studied at the University of Munster but at the age of 18 had to enlist in the German Army He was assigned as a soldier on the western front and was wounded several times After his discharge from the war he took a teachers course offered to veterans by the government and he also tried many different professions to make a living He taught for a year in an elementary school and also tried at being a stonecutter test car-driver accountant correspondent dealer and editor of different newspapers After trying many different professions Remarque finally began his career of writing as a sporting journalist and an assistant editor of Sportbild He began writing All Quiet on the Western Front and in 1929 it was published and translated in many languages With this novel came fame and it set off a big political controversy Some saw this novel based on a young man in World War I who faces the horrors of trenches and machine guns daily trying to save his own life as more than half his company is being killed off as a sober honest description of the uselessness of the war while others saw it as an anti-war novel offending front-line soldiers In the 1930s the government banned Remarques books in Germany
