Character Journal Huckleberry Finn Huck is the main character and narrator of the story He is a 14-year-old boy who lives in the town of St Petersburg Missouri During the different parts of the story he appears differently While living with Widow Douglas he dressed nicely but lost this appearance after he went out on the river where he became less concerned with appearance and clothes He prefers living in the woods rather being in a home He is trusting sharp and compassionate He shows a lot of compassion in the story This is obvious when he deals with Jim the Grangerfords and even with the duke and king He prefers living in the woods rather being in a home And when Hucks in trouble he can be extraordinary liar like when the 2 men who where looking for a young boy and a slave came along Huck told them that they were a long boy and a suck father with small pox so the men didnt turn them in But generally Huck is honest sensitive about other peoples feelings and kind but has a poor attitude towards himself His negative feelings about himself come from his belief that particular qualities make people exceptional such things as education religious training and a being willing to follow rules But hes thing that all this doesnt measure up so he thinks negatively about himself If Huck understood that his inner quality is what counts hed be more interested in changing society than in running away from it But because he accepts what hes been taught he sees himself as an outsider and he would rather run away and be be free of society and civilization
