Winston the Hero In 1984 Winston is finally broken down by the Thought Police after enduring emotional physical and psychological torture Although he ultimately gives up in the end Winston should be respected for his persistence in resisting the Thought Police Winston goes through an unbearable amount of intense physical torture in his fight against the Thought Police They mercilessly pound him and pump him full of electricity until it is like his body was being wrenched out of shape the joints were being slowly torn apartp 257 OBrien will not stop the torture until Winston succumbs to the fact that he is holding up five fingers Although Winston does submit he endures over double the intensity of the original pain until it is at the point where he can not physically keep conscious unless it stopped Therefore he should be respected for this courage Although at this point OBrien has beaten Winston into submission it is his body that submitted not his mind Winston knows that the only way to get the intense pain to stop is to tell OBrien what he wants to hear Winstons subconscious mind comes into play when he is sleeping and yells Julia Julia Julia my love Juliap293 He does not mean to say this but it shows that although he thinks he is beaten his mind is still functioning Even after all the beatings and intense pain he has not been broken to the point that he believes he loves Big Brother Winston is also faced with the emotional torture that he does not only have to conform to Big Brother but he also must betray his love Julia He holds out for her as long as he possibly can Through all the torture and in the face of more torture Winston says to OBriens face I have not betrayed Julia He knows that this will cause more pain however he is so noble that he
