Many social changes that were addresses in the1960s are still the issues being confronted today The 60s was a decade of social and politicalupheaval Inspite of all the turmoil there weresome positive results the civil rights revolutionJohn F Kennedys bold vision of a new frontierand the breathtaking advances in space helpedbring about progress and prosperity However therewas alot of negative effects student and anti-warprotest movements political assassinations andghetto riots excited American people and resultedin lack of respect for authority and the law The decade began under the shadow of the coldwar with the Soviet Union which was aggravated bythe U-2 incident the Berlin Wall and the Cubanmissile crisis along with the space race with theUSSR The decade ended under the shadow of theVietnam war which deeply divided Americans andtheir allies and damaged the countrysself-confidence and sense of purpose Even if youwerent alive in the 60s you know what they meantwhen they said tune in turn on drop out youknow why the nation celebrates Martin Luther KingJr birthday All of the social issues arereflected in todays society the civil rightsmovement the student movement the sexualrevolution the environment and more controversialThe sixties is also known for its rapid birthrate Nearly 76 million children were born to thisgeneration and for that they are called the BabyBoomers Suprisingly even though so many childrenwere being born not many parents knew how to raisethem The parents of the 50s and 60s were soconcerned with the world around them that going towork was the only image children had of theirfathers Kids didnt understand why they worked somuch just to gain more material possessionsChildren of this generation grew up learning justabout how to be free and happy Most of the timewhen thinking back to the sixties people rememberhearing about things such as sex drugs andHowever what the often tend to overlook is thelarge emphasis freedoms had on the era This doesnot just refer to the freedoms already possessed byevery American of the time
