There are many theories about what happened to the USS Maine in Havana Cuba on the night of February 15 1898 Two of the most logical theories although many could be argued and persuasive are that right wing radicals blew up the massive ship or that it the Spanish who wanted Cuba Both of these two types of people were capable of such devastation if they are analyzed enough The first theory was that it was the right wing radicals who wanted to get rid of the Americans Their motivation behind an attack like this is that they favored Spanish rule in Cuba and hated Americans for aiding the rebels as well as influencing Spanish policy Within all of the confusion and fighting as Cuba was uprising during this time it would be easy for practically anybody to either get on the Maine and place a homemade bomb or mine aboard its hulls or to make it look like an accident by sending a stray mine towards the Havana Harbor This theory is believable but you have to look at more that just one theory to make your own judgment The second although not the last theory is that somehow the Spanish snuck into the harbor and exploded the huge boat and sending it to its final resting spot in the depths of the merciless waters They too would have motivation The Americans were helping the rebels in Cuba and technically at that point enemies of the Spanish Knowing that the USS Maine was an American ship everything could have gone just right for the Spanish and the opportunity could have presented itself Either way both of these theories are arguable and both have some good reasoning behind them There are so many theories on this tragedy that it would be very difficult to decide on just one theory to be correct These two seem to be some of the best that both make sense
