AbstractOne of the serious problems in EOR is asphaltene deposition Asphaltene ispartly dissolved in oil partly in colloidal state and partly as micelleform depending on the composition of crude oil asphaltene can existpartly in soluble colloidal and micelle form The formation of asphalteneaggregates can be prevented by adding dispersing agents which arefunctionally similar to natural resins Inhibition strength is a capabilityof the inhibitor to delay formation of asphaltene flocculates that itdepends on the interaction between the inhibitor and asphaltene particlesIn the present work we investigated the effects of three types ofinhibitors on the onset of asphaltene precipitation using viscometricmethod Also in this study a new concept called effective adsorptionpoint of inhibitor was proposed in order to determine the stabilizationdispersion strength by measuring shear effects of asphaltene aggregatesThe results showed that the amount of adsorbed inhibitor on the surfaceof asphaltene micelles also stabilization strength started to increasewith increasing inhibitor concentration Comparison between ColloidalInstability Index CII and stabilization strength demonstrated that theinhibition and stabilization strengths of studied inhibitors is much higherthan the natural resins The results also revealed that there is strongagreement between the calculated volume fraction of suspended particles andthe shearing effects of asphaltene flocculates and also effectiveadsorption pointKeywords Asphaltene Resin Inhibitors Colloidal instability indexOnset of precipitation1 IntroductionOne of the major problems during petroleum
