Elie Wiesel once said There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice but there must never be a time when we fail to protest Wiesels words on the injustices in society and the moral reactions to such social inequities are profound principles in the ideals that define Ethos In Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare heavy parallels can be drawn between Wiesels principals regarding ethical reasoning and Brutuss speech in Act III Scene II Brutus addressing the people of Rome after Caesars death attempts to justify the assassination plot as an act of good will intended to free the people from a tyranny poised to arise Brutus uses ethos as his primary method of persuasion and argues for the prevailed justice arisen from Caesars death and appeals to the moral reasoning bound within the audiences character He begins his speech by saying Be patient till the last be silent that you may hear IIIii15-16 and continues on to defend the actions of the conspirators through an ethical standpoint After drawing the attention of the citizens of Rome Brutus then appeals for the people to remember his honest character and to be reminded of his truthfulness and trustworthiness when listening to his justification He says Believe me for mine honour that you may the better judge IIIii15-16 With this Brutus narrows his focus to his honest character his moral values that make up his sincere appeals and his ethical principles defined and implied through his integrity and virtuous character Then Brutus continues on by saying If there be any in this assembly to live all free men IIIii19-24 Through this Brutus attempts to emphasize and put into attention the fact that the assassination of Caesar was not born of spite antipathy or diabolical means but for the good of Rome For even though the Romans had lost their leader he had lost his own friend all to ensure that the liberties
