Swedens Economy Sweden enjoys one of the worlds highest standards of livings It has an urban industrialized economy based primarily on extensive forest rich iron ore deposits and abundant waterpower resources Over ninety percent of Swedens industry is privately owned However the government exercises substantial control over the economy to moderate economic fluctuations Sweden is nearly self-sufficient in agricultural products although only about seven percent of the land is cultivated As an advanced nation Sweden has relied heavily upon scientific farming including intensive fertilization and mechanization making it possible to have good crop yields despite poor soil rugged terrain and a short growing season About three percent of the population is engaged in agriculture forestry and fishing Agriculture is most extensively developed in the southern lowlands The farm estates in Sweden vary from large estates to small farm Many smaller farms have been consolidated into larger farms in the recent years The majority of agricultural production is consumed domestically Leading farm commodities are livestock and livestock products especially dairy items The major crops are wheat barley oats potatoes rapeseed rye and sugar beets The livestock populations include approximately 18 million cattle 23 million hogs 471000 sheep and 115 million poultry Having the largest timber reserves in Western Europe Sweden is the largest produce of timber products Forest products account for substantial portions of Swedens yearly industrial output and exports Annual production of timber in the early 1990s included about 254 million cu m about 897 million cu ft of logs for making lumber and about 215 million cu m about 759 million cu ft of logs for use in making paper Lower slopes of the northern highlands are the most productive lumbering areas in Sweden Many of the timber-processing plants are concentrated along the coast and some of the many rivers that flow into the gulf are used to transport the logs to the mills and to supply the mills with power Swedens
