The actual battle of Bull run took place on July 21 1861 Both commanders had similar strategies for the battle each panned to attack to others left flank General Beauregard planned the attack for the south but his Army was so disorganized that most of his orders never reached the brigade commanders Only two brigades those of Longstreet and Jones actually crossed Bull Run while the rest sat awaiting orders and their attack was soon stopped when the Union attacked on the other end of the battle field The Union opened the battle with the Union 1st Division commanded by General McDowell crossing Bull run at Stone Bridge at 515 am However this was not the Union main attack Its purpose was to attract the Confederate troops away from the main point of attack at Sudly Church But the second attack Made by the Union 2nd Division commanded by Colonel A E Burnside came too late and some of the troops that were drawn away from Sudly Church were able to back track and engage the Union A small Confederate force led by Colonel Evans quickly moved and made a stand against the much larger Union Division and tried to hold their ground until Confederate reserves could come to help them The Union was Soon aided by part of the 3rd Division as were the confederates who were aided by the regiments of Bee and Bartow The Union had very superior numbers and should have beaten the smaller confederate force but they attacked them one regiment at a time and the Confederates were able to hold their ground Soon a Union Brigade le by General William Sherman attacked the confederate right flank and their line fell back As they retreated General Bee saw an inspiring sight a confederate infantry force commanded by General Jackson was standing there ground awaiting the Union Attack This is where Jackson earned his nickname Stonewall when Bee proclaimed Look
