When children are born they want and need to be cared for in what ever relationship so that they can feel a sense of security and warmth There are a number of theorists that have ideas about how a child develops Many are used nowadays to see when a child is mature and when they sense emotions Vygotsky is a theorist who offers theoretical perspectives on how a child develops His theory relies mostly on three things that all revolve around everything teaching the child how it is raised Culture Language and Zone of Proximal Development Culture plays a big part in Vygotskys Cognitive Development Theory He believed that the cultural background and environment played a very important role in the development of a child A person could not develop the way he or she had without learning from others in the environment they were raised in Vygotsky separates the importance of culture into two sections Elementary Mental Thinking and Higher Mental Thinking Elementary Mental Thinking is like instinct it is using what we have not learned what is already inside us It can be seen when a new-born baby turn its head when a person speaks and how it recognize the mothers smell Higher Mental Thinking is how we use language and the thinking process I believe that a childs culture and family have a large affect on their learning development Like Vygotsky I feel that every person that interacts with a child has a big influence on their intellectual development Being amongst small children on a daily basis I experience and see how a child can push their limits of intelligence The children can do this by being in an environment with someone of greater expertise In my class we work in small groups and I can see and encourage whenever necessary children to help each other These small groups give the children the opportunity to share their ideas and master new skills
