The number of women working outside the home has risen in most industrialized countries throughout the last twenty years and it continues to rise in many developing countries Cherrin Conway 1998 One of the major contributions to this factor is the fact that the country went through in an Industrial Revolution which made it easier for women to be able to leave the home and give up their housekeeping responsibilities to help her husband bring income into the home As the country became more industrialized many home tasks were taken over by commercial enterprise Mass production made it easier and cheaper to purchase the familys needs than to rely on home production Lifton 1964 Between the time of 1865 and 1890 the United States saw a dramatic increase in the number of factories being built around the country Along with this industrialization came the need for workers Because of the great demand for workers labor agent were send out into the countryside to recruit women to work in the mills and factories Baxandall Gordon 1995 Working in the factories was much of the same work as in the home but now it was in a new location Once married women generally left their jobs to look after their own households however At this time 18 of women were in the workforce 5 of which were married Blau Ferber 1995 p 23 Between the time of 1920 and 1940 the number and proportions of employed women continued to grow in new kinds of jobs Clerical work became steadily more common as an occupation and new kinds of service work more often commercial and public as opposed to domestic service drew in women These types of jobs included waitressing saleswork and operating telephones Baxandall Gordon 1995 The main reason for the employment of most women today is the effect war had on the economy World War II was the war that further widened
