The essay Amnesty was written by John F Kavanaugh who is a philosophy professor and a Roman Catholic priest In his essay he writes to the general public and addresses the injustice of the current treatment and the laws regarding illegal immigrants He wants for ways to offer legal status to anyone who contributes to our common good to be established He claims that for how much emphasis is put on how Christian and humane our country is it is not shown with the treatment of the illegal immigrants He wants for the country to think of the least of our brothers and sisters as it says in the Bible in Matthew 25 Kavanaugh goes on to give reasons why illegal immigrants should be treated more compassionately and he also addresses the opposing views He says that while there are some illegal immigrants that are drunks and dealers and running away from the law most illegal immigrants are good people that are coming to the United States to try and make a better life for their family and support them He does accept and acknowledge the fact that unrestrained immigration would do nothing but hurt the immigrants our country and their homeland but that does not mean that immigration should not exist at all He provides a story of a woman who has entered the country illegally for a second time so that she can be with her family If she gets caught she will have to go to prison for five years She has caused no harm at all by coming back over to be with her family Kavanaughs essay addresses the issue of the unjust treatment of illegal immigrants and how they should be given a chance to prove themselves good before they automatically get deported back His thesis is that the country must devise ways to offer legal status to anyone that contributes to our common goodThis essay is an argument favoring
