A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini set inAfghanistan follows two women Mariam and Laila through their childhoodand into their development as adults The story is set duringAfghanistans tumultuous thirty year transition from Soviet occupationto Taliban control and post-Taliban rebuilding The story more closelyfollows the two protagonists Laila and Mariam who manage in their ownway to not only endure but overcome the rigid precepts that their Afghansociety placed on them as women The Talibans bias against women wasproclaimed as a sort of justice as though they the women had donesomething wrong and that their only purpose was being a shell for theirhusbands heirs In this dark and brooding society where the cries of awomen went by unheard Laila and Mariam were able to find solstice intheir relationship with each other and towards the end of the novelbecame almost one being essentially in their strive to fill the emptyspaces in their hearts left by the ones that abandoned and betrayedthem The only person Mariam truly adored as a child was her fatherJalil and he had betrayed her by giving her away to fend for herselfwith a complete later abusive stranger Rasheed who without herdirect consent became her husband Mariam soon learned that in a maledominated society just as her mother Nana had warned her as a childa mans accusing finger did always find a woman without fail for theirfaults and shortcomings and when it did it was the woman who got theworse of it Ive come to believe that theres a sense of a lack ofresponsibility on the males part Laila on the other hand didnt havea strong female figure in her life because her mother Fariba wasntthere for her daughter as she was growing up Laila was overshadowedby her brothers Ahmad and Noor who filled Faribas heart and left roomfor no more Laila and Babi to
