In a debate over the differences in potential changes in the Americangovernment President Obama and Governor Romney employed the use ofvarious rhetorical devices in order to convey a sense of loyalty to theAmerican system absolute validity in their arguments and a wideassortment of otherIn the first sentence of this excerpt Romney claims that Americanshave not made the progress needed to put people back to work inreference to the four years of Obamas term as president of the UnitedStates which Romney found unsatisfactory Progress impliesleadership and advancement that is insinuated to be lacking and thatRomney himself will achieve and accomplish The governor states thatthis is needed exuding a total lack of care concern from Obama tocontinue for four years with no progression To explain that hispatriotism towards America Romney states that we Americans have notmade progress Rather than setting himself apart from Americans toshow his disproval of Obamas decisions he cleverly employs associationwith all of American citizens to portray his dedication and allegianceto the country despite any problems In the following paragraph Governor Romney continues his argumentagainst Obama by listing things that he feels the president didinadequately By stating that the President took Detroit bankrupt aswell as General Motors and Chrysler Romney creates ways to refute whatObama had previously stated as well as a list of grievances that inthis form sentence by sentence creates the appearance of a more drawnout and much longer list than it actually is Also in his use of youtook rather than the president took the governor changes hisaudience from the general public to the president in a particularlyaccusatory fashion This change in pronouns could also be an accusationto the citizens of America who Romney viewed as allowing the Presidentto take these actions Similar to his list of bankrupted corporationsRomney makes known his plan for bankrupted companies to go throughbankruptcy like 7-Eleven did and Macys and Continental Airlinesthis time with polysyndeton in order to create the illusion of a longerlist and therefore
