In the wake of lifes conditions one may learn who they truly areThat is the basis of Sophocles play Oedipus Rex Oedipus falls tothe hands of fate in this play there is nothing he can do no matterhow hard he tries to stop his destiny from being fulfilled Oedipusplays an example of hamartia proving it to be one of the driving forcesbehind the hardships that befall him Oedipus also becomes victimized byhis hubris leading to his major downfall Because of the very realhuman associations one is able to make with Oedipus allow the reader togo through a type of catharsis where they are purged of any feelings offear for Oedipus continued fate and the pity which they experience atthe site of what Oedipus has become Oedipus has a great sense of determination His drive comes from hisunwillingness to be brought to shame and eventually to remain a greatruler to his people it is prophesied that Oedipus is fated tocouple with his mother he will bring a breed of children into thelight no man can bear to see- Oedipus will kill his father the onewho gave him life 873-875 This prophecy directly from Apollocaused Oedipus to run and run until he was certain that he wouldnever see the shame of all those oracles come true 879-880 Oedipuswas so determined to leave his city and the people who raised him justbecause of an oracle he did not mention anything caring that it wouldobviously hurt his parents to leave Oedipus did not stop to think thatmaybe the mere fact about not being able to have his questions answeredabout his true parents would spark some suspicion He was too determinedto leave the ones who raised him Oedipus determination did not stop there When the new city that heruled after the death of its leader was plagued the oracle told Creonthat the killer of Laius their previous king was living in the landand must be punished at least by exile
