Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a story of the relationship between George and Lennie and their journey of achieving there American dream Modernism is a movement in American literature from 1914-1950 defined by eight recurring characteristics Of mice and Men is a modern novel containing the characteristics of tragedy impersonality and allusionOf Mice and Men has the Modern characteristic of impersonality Impersonality is not caring about your fellow man or having a lack of emotional involvement towards others In the novel impersonality is shown in the way that the stable hand Crooks is treated cause Im black They play cards in there but I cant play because Im black They say I stink Well I tell you all of you stink to me 68 This is impersonality because the men dont care enough to get to know crooks on a personal level just because hes black This shows not caring about your fellow man because the men interact with Crooks only when they are working then when the days over they act like hes gross and exile him to his own bunk which none of them have never even been in The men put only put up with Crooks when they need his help and are working but when there not the do not care about him at all Impersonality is shown again in the mournful ending of the novel After Lennie kills Curleys wife and his puppy he vanishes to the woods to hide for his life George knowing that the Curley will kill him is determined to get to him first and when he does he shoots him the in back of the head while calming him with tales of tending the rabbits When the men arrive cannot fathom why George would be so upset about this This shows impersonality because the men
