John Steinbecks extraordinary novel Of mice and men is a tragic yet compelling tale published in 1937 It competently illustrates the difficult lives of those men who were affected by the infamous Great Depression which was the catastrophic aftermath of the Wall Street crash in 1929 The novel focuses on the lonely existence of those men who were forced to leave the comfort and security of their homes in order to search for the American Dream Steinbecks past greatly influenced the content of the novel as he personally experienced the dull hopeless life of being a migrant worker Of mice and men is tale of many themes such as friendship desperation and loss however Steinbeck constantly targets the prevalent theme of loneliness throughout the novel by cleverly portraying it through his unique characters and his distinctive writing style This essay will analyse how Steinbeck has depicted loneliness from start to finish specifically through the language devices and intelligent techniques used to make it a classic twentieth century masterpieceOf mice and men is set during the 1930s which was a devastating time in history as America was facing an immense downfall in its economy causing it to fall into the state of depression Civilians were plunged into a discordant reality where they were ripped apart from their family and friends in order to seek employment People travelled alone from place to place never truly settling down and forming relationships as during this time period they held no importance or moral value Steinbeck uses this as a perfect base for his novel as this calamitous time period generally represents loneliness and isolationThe novel commences with the opening line A few miles south of Soledad this is a smart technique used by Steinbeck as Soledad is Spanish for solitude From this the readers can identify that Steinbeck has subtly hinted the theme of loneliness from the very start of the novel Steinbeck further indicates loneliness
