Lorraine Hansberry writer of the film Raisin in the Sun takes place during the 1950s in the Southside of Chicago The film begins with the Youngers an African American family of five living in the slums of Chicago in a little confined apartment Mr Younger has passed away and from that death he leaves a 10000 insurance check to his spouse The whole family is thrilled about the amount of money coming in the mail shortly Each member of the family has an idea of how enormous of an impact this money can transform their lives for the better This money will give them hope to believe they can change their lives around Even if they put in the hard work and dedication the Youngers will not get far in life living in a racist society Although the Younger family has strong intelligent characters they will not live happily ever after because they live in poverty and a racist societyThe entire family has their own agenda and dreams when they get their hands on this money Mrs Younger dreams to get out this small apartment and have the house of her dream she and her deceased husband would have wanted that She wants to live the American Dream She wants her daughter Beneatha to pursue her dreams to become a doctor and chase her dreams without worrying about the price tag Without this 10000 insurance check Beneatha would have to consider whether to trade love for money She would have to consider whether to date a man of money or a guy she truly likes for the sake of her future Lastly Mrs Youngers son Walter Lee wants to invest his father 10000 insurance check into a liquor store hoping he can hit it big In his head he has high hopes that this get rich quick scheme can solve the money problems of his family His dreams come to a stopped when his friend
