Rosemarys Baby directed by Roman Polanski and released in 1968 follows the suspicious pregnancy of protagonist Rosemary Woodhouse Rosemary believes her odd meddlesome neighbors Roman and Minnie Castevet to be spell-casting witches and fears that her unborn baby is in danger because of them Rosemary experiences a strange dream on the night that she plans to conceive a child that sets the plot in motion It is revealed at the end of the film that Rosemarys baby is in actuality the son of Satan and her pregnancy was manipulated by the Castevets during her dream Though the dream contains much reality Rosemarys subconscious projects her feelings of religion into the dream This dream sequence is consumed by religious innuendos all of which point towards the suggestion that Rosemary is not as in tune with her faith as she once was Critical theorist Sigmund Freud concluded that all dreams are intended to fulfill some type of wish whether this wish is explicitly obvious to the conscious mind or not and that there cannot be any dreams other than wish-dreams Freud 21-33 He inferred that even nightmares that consist of unpleasant emotions and events are wish-fulfillers in their own way He theorizes that where a dreamis accompanied by an unpleasant effect this is invariably a consequence of the fact that the wish which constitutes the driving power behind the given dream is a repressed wish Seeman and Buck 2 Rosemarys dream is undoubtedly unpleasant and so this theory exhibits itself quite well in this film In the film Rosemarys Baby through the depiction of Rosemarys contempt for willingness to scorn inability to continue and unfixable break from Catholicism Freuds concept of wish-fulfillment is portrayed emphasizing how unpleasant dreams represent suppressed wishes using displeasing elements to show that Rosemary subconsciously wishes to shun her Catholic faithThe first indication that Rosemary is unhappy with her religion is presented by her unpleasant response to a comment made in her dream
