Upon watching Sherlock Holmes I have come to the realisation that Holmes is portrayed in two different waysIn the original Sherlock Holmes series The Speckled Band Holmes is a middle aged man who has a fetish for weird things such as murders His job consists of solving the mysteriescrimes the police pass off as unimportant or an accident He being middle aged gives the impression hes experienced at his job However it could also give the impression that hes too old to do his job properly and may miss or forget important details In addition to that he lives in 221 Baker Street London His idiosyncratic habits are his smoking of cigars which he does frequently and that suggests that its ok and not frowned upon which also tells us hes living in a time smoking was ok Also when he talks he often uses hand gestures to help explain what hes saying As well as that he enjoys his job and being paid isnt a priority In addition to that hes blunt and arrogant to everyone An example of this is when a man bends a metal stick so Sherlock bends it back into place afterwards In the new Sherlock Holmes series A Study in Pink Holmes still lives in 221 Baker Street London and in the first episode Dr Watson Sherlocks accomplice and moves in with Holmes As a result of Sherlock and Dr Watson living together and Sherlock never dating or having a girlfriend everybody thinks Holmes and Watson are in a relationship This suggests its based in modern times as gay relationships were illegal until the 1960s Despite Holmes smoking in the original version of Sherlock Holmes in the new version Holmes is a recovering smoker using nicotine patches on his arm During the episode A Study in Pink it is also suggested that Holmes is a drug addict I came to that conclusion when the police department raid Sherlocks and
