Sonnet 19 by William Shakespeare is a poem that deals with the incorruptibility of love against the corrosive power of time It is a Shakespearean sonnet with Shakespeare as the speaker During the first two stanzas the magnificent power of time is acknowledged and praised by the speaker He describes several horrific unavoidable events that happen to all beings as time passes Incidentally Shakespeare seems to be submissive to time in an awestruck tone during this half The second half of the poem deals with the Shakespeares plea about preserving his lovers beauty to time He asks time to leave him untainted and he also tells time that even if his pleas are not approbated their love will forever remain young The plea is made in a very aggressive almost a rebellious tone The theme is about preserving and cherishing the delightful times one has with his loved ones even though the world will change as time goes on Sonnet 19 utilizes symbolism and gruesome imagery to illustrate the dominion of time Firstly Shakespeare describes dreadful events that occur in symbol nature such as lions paws being blunted 1 the teeth of a tiger being plucked 3 and The death of a phoenix4 These three creatures found in epics and symbolize human attributes For example The lion is commonly referred to as the king of the jungle Its paws give it the strength it needs to rule over the other animals These paws symbolize the strength of humans Moreover The tigers teeth are known to be a talisman for tenaciousness and the therefore symbolize endurance Also the phoenix have an astonishing life span however even their life eventually fades away In other words The fact that the attributes of these majestic creatures dissipate over time connotes the fact that all things eventually come to an end Secondly a form of imagery used to depict the effects of time is when the speaker
