On the 5th of October 1974 two explosions rang out across the streets of Guildford England The explosion killed five and injured sixty five The bombs targeted service men and women who recently were stationed in Northern Ireland The four suspects believed to be responsible were Gerry Conlon Paul Hill Patrick Armstrong and Carole Richardson The four were arrested in connection to the Guildford bombings in December 1974 and convicted in October 1975 During the proceedings the four suspects confessed and were sentenced to life imprisonment However after serving fifteen years in jail they appealed The appeal found that the confessions were forced by torture methods utilized by the police The police interrogation disregarded the rights the suspects had as citizens which lead to this being called a miscarriage of justiceFirstly the investigation conducted by the police was thorough The four suspects were believed to have been spotted near the two pubs during the time of the explosion Furthermore these claims were later proven untrue After the explosion the Pubs were cleared and established as a crime scene All useful evidence was found to have been destroyed within the blast Therefore there was nothing linking the four suspects to the actual bombings The police were able to acquire a confession shortly after the four suspects were detained The confession stated That Conlon had gone to Ireland and learned how to build explosive devices from the IRA Furthermore the suspects stated that the explosive material was wrapped in aluminum casing The suspects stated that the bomb was placed in a box They had carried the explosive on a bicycle and walked in and placed the box containing the explosive on one of the tables The suspects also added that they detonated the explosive remotely and then discarded the detonatorAdditionally during the trial the prosecution dismissed more than one hundred inconsistencies that the confession contained as being simply irrelevant Toolis Inconsistencies were parts of the suspects testimony
