In The Odyssey the author portraits that the following traits are key to determine the loyalty of a characterthe ability to recognize Odysseus even in disguise to remain loyal to Odysseus throughout a long period of time and how concern the character is about OdysseusIn the book the most loyal characters have the ability to recognize Odysseus in his disguise This makes recognition a key characteristic of loyalty Take Odysseus dog Argo for example When Odysseus reached his palace disguised as an old beggar Argos sensed Odysseus standing by he thumped his tail nuzzling low and his ears dropped though he had no strength to drag himself an inch toward his master364 Argos recognized Odysseus right away even with his disguise Argos was so loyal to Odysseus he didnt even have to see Odysseus to recognize him he sensed him from distance away Argos was so happy to see his master after 20 years he uses all the strength he has left to show Odysseus how loyal he is to him even after 20 years This action earns Argos his place as one of the most loyal characters in the book Another character that recognizes Odysseus in his disguise is the nurse In a flash nurse knew the scar403 Even though the nurse did not recognize Odysseus the first time she met him but the nurse never forgot anything about Odysseus after twenty years The nurse showed her loyalty in Odysseus when she knew right away the beggar was Odysseus when she saw the scar In book 24 Odysseus uses recognition as a test for his fathers loyalty And I will put my father to the test see if the old man knows me now on sight or fails to after twenty years apart475 Odysseus decides to put his father on a test to see if he is still loyal to Odysseus and the test is whether if his father can recognize him or not
