Nathaniel Hawthornes novel The Scarlet Letter depicts a society wrought with moral inconsistencies Throughout the novel Hawthorne lionizes the difference of sin in Reverend Dimmesdale and Hesters lives Dimmesdale suffered privately from his clandestine sin however Hester was forced by the community to live openly with her sin ironically resulting in some relief to her guilty conscience Hester even though publically known for her shame still remorses for the suffering Dimmesdale must endure Hawthorne gives examples throughout the novel when Dimmesdale and Hester display acts of penance for their mutual transgression and yet continually suffer emotionally socially and physically In The Scarlet Letter Hesters scarlet letter A relieves her of her suffering and anguish Dimmesdale wont receive full reconciliation until he announces his wrongdoing publicly and slowly dies as a result during his last sermon in the arms of his true lover HesterHester was brutally tortured both mentally and socially ironically resulting in that she became stronger Hester was forced to wear the scarlet letter A visibly on her chest in order to present herself shamefully for all to see Having to follow through with these retributions resulted in fortifying her mind and released the secrecy and guilt she had built up for her sin against God and her Puritan beliefs Immediately when convicted of her sin she was forced to face her peers and neighbors in the most embarrassing and shameful manner possible She walked from the jail house through the streets of onlookers whom tagged her as a sinner She perchance underwent an agony from every footstep of those that thronged to see her as if her hear had been flung into the street for them all to spurn and trample upon 49 That abhorrent walk for Hester was simply the beginning of her punishment She walked through the crowds of people she lived amongst with the scarlet letter A blazing across her chest symbolizing her sin resulting in her deteriorating mental state
