AbsurdismHow do we know if we are living or simply existing Are we conscious orunconscious In The Stranger by Albert Camus the main character Meursaltmakes his way through life living like a dead man as if he felt norational purpose towards existence or life itself In the book threeimportant events lead me to believe Meursalt was an unconscious manApproaching the end of his life Meursalt goes through a devaluation ofthings and becomes conscious he soon regrets his decisions but the onlything he could do is accept themImmediately Meursalts actions begin to catch my attention After beingtold his mother was pronounced deceased he seemed absolutelyuninterested and had no emotion whatsoever Being any other person youwould be in shock tremendously concerned and most importantly veryemotional However Meursalt appears heartless as if it was just anyother day literally not sure when his mother actually passed awaySpecifically he says Mother died today Or maybe yesterday I cantbe surePart 1 Chapter 1 It really didnt matter to him he saw noimportance to his mothers death The next day after the funeralSunday Meursalt returned home and was finding things to do he askedMarie if she wanted to go to the movies she agreed but was startled whenshe saw him wearing a black suit with a tie as if he was mourning Ispossible that everyone has a different way of showing grief towardssomething It possible that Meursalt does feel grief but has a differentway of showing itFurthermore Meursalt seems to find no importance to anything in hislife It showed dramatically when he met Marie they quickly became morethan friends and were tangled in a romantic and sexual relationship butMeursalt didnt have a care in the world for Marie That is when Marieasked Meursalt to marry her he made it clear it made no difference tohim His words were She asked me if I loved her I told her it didntmean anything but that I didnt think so Part 1 Chapter 3
