The Ibo tribe is depicted as being a community of fairness traditionand culture In Things Fall Apart Achebe reveals a new face of the Ibopeople through the eyes of Okonkwo a strong Ibo leader Okonkwo was awealthy and respected member with three wives and fields of yams Hisdetermination branches off from the disappointment of his father whichpropelled his motivation for success In the end his drive ultimatelyleads to his downfall Things begin to fall apart in Okonkwos life whenhis civilization is threatened by changes in society Okonkwo was dominated by the fear of failure causing him to avoidweakness and emotion One example of this is when he kills his sonIkemafuna The oracle told him that someone had to kill him but Okonkwodoing the deed shows his determination to not show weakness in front ofthe other soldiers even if it cost a loved ones life Okonkwos guiltis evident in chapter eight when the thought of his son wont leave hismind He did not sleep at night He tried not to think aboutIkemafuna but the more he tried the more he thought about him 63This quote shows us how Okonkwo is starting to show his feelings andletting his guard down An additional example is when Okonkwo beat hisyoungest wife Ouiugo Okonkwos temper triggered him to disrupt the weekof peace The week of peace was a time where the people of the Ibo tribewould express peace and celebration by generating kindness and gatheringyams Ouiugo went to plait her hair and did not return in time to makethe afternoon meal angering Okonkwo In his anger he had forgottenthat it was the weak of peaceBut Okonkwo was not the man to stopbeating somebody half way through not even for fear of a goddess30 The other wives ran away terrified of their husband and the peopleof the village hearing the screams grew frightened of Okonkwo fordisrupting the week of peace The spread of Christianity drastically altered Okonkwos life in severalways Okonkwo
