Many immigrants from all over the world move to the United States motivated by the American Dream They are looking for the American Dream of liberty equality and opportunity How many immigrants realize their dreams Zeitoun is a nonfiction book of written by Dave Eggers in 2009 Abdulrahman Zeitoun the main character of the story lives in New Orleans Louisiana and he is a forty-seven year old Syrian American Muslim He is married to a white Muslim American Kathy and they have four children All his children are enrolled in private schools in addition he has a successful construction business and also owns many properties in the city When Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans he does not evacuate and rescues many pets and victims Zeitoun is considered to be a Syrian American hero It seems as if his American Dream could exist however his dream collapses suddenly and he becomes a broken hero Although Zeitoun is a hard worker as a first immigrant to the United States and also treats people fairly and equally he has difficulties due to his background and faith in achieving the American DreamZeitoun is a typical immigrant in the United States who isstruggling to achieve his goals yet racial and religious prejudice forces him and his family down Prejudice affects a society negatively Accordingly discrimination will occur as lack of knowledge contributes to prejudice In his book Zeitoun David Eggars describes the discrimination which Zeitouns wife Kathy experienced For instance whenKathy is shopping with her friend an incident occurs A girl of about fifteen was crouched behind Kathy her arm raised about to yank the hijab off Kathys head 46 The girl and her friends laugh at Kathy Kathy is shocked furthermore she feels they have a lack of education In Another example of discrimination from Zeitoun Eggers explains that At West Jefferson High Schoolthe teacher had pulled back the girls hijab and said I hope God punishes you No
