During the term recently the class sought to understand not only queer cinema but the visual portrayal of individuals who self-describe as queer Throughout the course of the class there were prevalent depictions of queerness and queer couples within the context of queer cinema within Europe and involving uniquely European dynamics However as stated this context and portrayal of couples has almost exclusively been within the realm of euro-centric cinema thus any understanding of same-sex couples or more so the visual portrayal of such couples within cinema as a whole is limited to the narrow window of the geographical region and film selection Given this regional specific understanding does not reflect a wider terrestrial space it calls into question the representation of such couples and whether such representation harms or helps such couples Thus it could be said that there is a gap in the understanding of the aesthetic portrayal that without an alternative cinematic and geographical comparison offers little to no insight It is in this area that I wish to address the portrayal of same-sex couples More so I wish to focus on the overall image proposed of same-sex couples within two films and the influence these representations have upon the image of same-sex couples and queer individuals In order to offer an insight into this it is necessary to analyze and then compare and contrast the overall image of same-sex couples put forth in two films La Cage aux Folles and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry It is therefore proposed that each of these films serve to aesthetically and narratively represent same-sex couples in different manners whereas the first film offers a visual and narrative representation that serves to reinforce an inclusive and positive image of same-sex couples within the scope of engagement with normative standards the latterIn the first film La Cage aux Folles the director portrays Renato and Albin in a positive manner by way of his specific
