1 Prior to reading A Long Way Gone I had little to no knowledge about the civil wars of Sierra Leone Ishmaels story has changed my perception of who fought in the war how they acquired soldiers and the overall experience of the people involved It gives me an open mind as to how soldiers are living today 2 During chapter seven Ishmael has a flashback moment where he has recollections of his father and an elder blessing their home when they first moved to Mogbwemo During this part of the chapter the concepts of faith and hope shift from him not having hope from losing his family to him having faith that he would see them again Ishmael is sustained emotionally and spiritually by crying 3 In chapter eight there are examples of negative assumptions in communities that have begun to associate the boys appearance with evil They overcome these associations by ignoring the people and having faith World leaders could learn that the importance of stereotypical judgement is very high4 Ishmaels parents taught him about being strong and not letting other people see your weaknesses As seen on page 54 his father says If you are alive there is hope for a better day and something good to happen If there is nothing good left in the destiny of a person he or she will die His father while he was around taught him good lessons as to being a good person5 The role of American hip-hop culture in Ishmaels life was important Ishmael loved listening to hip hop He also liked dancing to it and singing it At times he used it to get through hard parts in his life6 Ishmael has a very good relationship with nature He is constantly using nature as shelter and food For example as stated in the text The sun peacefully sailed through the white clouds birds sang from the treetops the trees danced to
