Throughout history scientists have made significant discoveries and technological advancements in an attempt to further improve humanitys knowledge about themselves and the world they live in Although more often than not scientists attempt to do something beneficial for the human population there are stereotypes lurking about featuring a mad or evil scientist an insane villainous human with the mind of a genius Robert Louis Stevensons novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde features a scientist by the name of Dr Henry Jekyll He is introduced to readers as a wealthy well-mannered and well-known physician in his community and is known for his acts of kindness However Dr Jekyll is not entirely pure Readers are made aware that since Jekylls youth he engages in various strange experiments in an attempt to bring out his dark side one that no one could picture him having He eventually succeeds and creates Mr Edward Hyde a ruthless cruel monster Although Jekyll does use science to create Mr Hyde this cannot be perceived as an insult towards scientists but rather should be seen as a dark side that every human being possesses and is capable of letting run wild To add to this it is quite impractical to imagine a scientist creating a potion that allows them to turn into a Mr Hyde especially since the books frame of reference is the 1800s Additionally readers are told of Jekylls gruesome and miserable childhood leading up to the events of him creating Mr Hyde Rather than viewing the novella as an attempt to show how dangerous science is readers should instead consider the potential danger a child with a painful childhood possesses Since one should be made aware that everyone possesses an evil side it is impractical to create a potion that will turn one into a monster and a miserable childhood leaves room for danger the novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde cannot
