In John Herseys Hiroshima 1946 Hersey describes the lives of six residents before and after the bomb on Hiroshima which is dropped from an American plane during World War II near midnight on August 6 1945 One of the six people who Hersey wrote about is Mr Kiyoshi Tanimoto a pastor of the Hiroshima Methodist Church who survived the bomb on Hiroshima by being between two big rocks at Mr Matsuos garden After the explosion his compassion for other survivors helped him remain focused on living his life while dealing with his fear and guiltMr Tanimoto is fearful when the bomb dropped on Hiroshima For instance Mr Tanimoto is fearful when he saw everyone hurt in some way on the path to find his family and does not know what happened to them immediately after the bomb exploded He began to run in fear-- toward the city 18 Also Mr Tanimotos fear shows when he gets a fever and has to get a nurse that gives him injections to make him better Mr Tanimoto feels guilty after the bomb hit Hiroshima For example his feelings of guilt show when he is the only one that is not hurt and says Excuse me for having no burden like yours 30 Also he feels guilty when he accidentally tripped someone woundedFurthermore Mr Tanimotos compassion occurs after the bomb hit Hiroshima For instance his compassion shows when he sees an old woman with a broken left arm caring for a three or four year old boy Mr Tanimotos compassion for others is displayed when he put the boy on his back and took the woman to a grammar schoolfor use as a temporary hospital in case of emergency 17 Moreover Mr Tanimoto shows compassion when the fire is spreading from the bomb and gets a boat to carry the most severely injured people across the river to get away from the fireMr Tanimoto shows fear guilt and compassion
