Obsession is the domination of ones idea or thought that constantly preoccupies a persons mind Depending on the reason obsession could make a person insane or successful Life of Pie a fantasy adventure novel written by Yann Martel the main character Pi is obsessed with religion spirituality and animals His obsession was a result of success hence surviving the ocean for 227 days Being optimistic as well as being hopeful kept him moving forward During the years of his childhood he discovered many religions and kept god close to him thus symbolizing his ambition to overcome hardships Pi was engraved with two golden qualities his spirituality and religion in which helped him keep calm through the deepest of times Through suffering and distress Pi had discovered his inner spiritual insights Furthermore his knowledge of animals and obsession with Richard both contributed to help him became more courageous and stern becoming king of the boatHe endured these 200 days with the belief that God was watching him even when he felt that God had abandoned him he was watching When it seemed that God was indifferent to his suffering he was watching Pi is a precocious Indian boy enthralled by the diversity of religion in his country whom is forced into moving surviving shipwreck witnessing a horrific death and cannibalism at sea Yet he survives this ordeal with his faith and the gods of the three religions he practiced Christianity Hinduism and Islam Pi grew up in an Indian town of Pondicherry with his father a zookeeper Just as most children in the Indian culture Pi was brought up with the ways of Hindu religion but later he discovers Christianity and its message of love Moreover he goes on to discover Islam a beautiful religion of brotherhood and devotion Page 67 Discovering these religions made him a pious member of all three With their similarities and difference he finds it hard to choose one Throughout the
