The origins of J M Barries classic fairy tale Peter Pan can be traced back to 1904 The novel displays classic gender stereotypes regarding expected social norms in earlytwentieth-century in English families While it may be a reflection of the novels age it nonetheless warrants discussion Mrs Darling is our introduction to the motherly archetype Her idealized nature is contrasted with childlike nature of Mr Darling showing the necessity of a mother to keep order inside the family at that time Later Wendy assumes this position as the caretaker Neverland since she is the only lady figure according to the lost boys While Tinkerbelle reflects an antithesis to the mother-like role she still wishes to the sole caretaker of Peter Her lack of mother like qualities however diminishes her importance in Peters life in comparison to Wendy Motherhood is reflected within Peter Pan as the most important role for women to fulfill in society Mr and Mrs Darling are our first representation of male and female gender role in Peter Pan Mrs Darling is reflected as a woman who Loved everything to be just so Barrie 56 She is the anchor of the household and Mr Darling is the breadwinner Mr Darling displays some childlike tendencies for instance when he cannot tie his tie properly He though Mrs Darling was not sufficiently impressed and he went on sternly unless this tie is around my neck we dont go out to dinner to-night and if I dont go out to dinner tonight I never go to the office again and you and I starve and our children will be flung into the streets Barrie 65 This catering to male ego and maintaining a calm demeanor is presented in the novel as another duty of motherhood In a sense the patriarch while making the decision is placated by the mother to keep order Mothers are presented as loving calm
