How do we lift our darkest most depressing and lonely moments up How can we continue to live when we are most deeply alone helpless and our whole world seems to be collapsing We can if we have something to hold on to In the novel called Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck the story takes place in the 1930s of America during the Great Depression During that time The American Dream was no more and had become the land of misfortune because during this period of time farmers faced a decade of droughts and windstorms Many abandoned their homestead and took to the road to find work in hopes someday they would be able to reestablish themselves They came to California as their hope land for prosperity Their quest and strong determination of owning land and a home kept many farmers going Steinbeck points out that dreams are vital to everyone in order to be motivated to keep going in life Steinbeck shows the importance of dreams and the drive to get it The life of a ranch hand is grim yet the characters in Of Mice and Men still dreamed of a better life The dream of owning land---The American Dream is what motivates the two main characters George and Lennie to endure their hardship as migrant ranch hands They travel from place to place looking for work with only a bundle of their worldly possessions The work does not last very long George explained the despair of a ranch hand to Lennie Guys like us that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world They dont belong no place They come to a ranch an work up a stake and the go into town and blow their stake and the first thing you know theyre poundin their tail on some other ranch
