I will be arguing that people have a right to privacy in the work place but also that there may be both explicit and implicit moral principles which limit the extent of their privacy Technology is one major reason why there are privacy issues in the work place Even though technology has improved work conditions there have been new problems for workers because of the new advancements in technology Some of those issues include drug testing genetic testing surveillance and social mediaThe first reason why technology has infringed on workers privacy is because of genetic testing A few examples of genetic testing include genetic screening and genetic monitoring Genetic screening examines a workers genetic predisposition to see if there is any chemically caused diseases Genetic monitoring will test workers for genetic damages which could be cause by an exposure to a certain chemical Persson 59 Should an employer be able to not hire an individual because they want to reduce the costs of health and life insurance premiums Theresa Brady states two arguments against genetic testing the first is abnormal findings can lead to social prejudices and the second is testing may encourage what she calls as a Hitler mentality60 What she meant is that someone may have an abnormal finding but may never develop the disease or perhaps the disease could be treated In the second statement she is talking about looking for the perfect race which would leave those who didnt fit the description out of societys rights and protections 60 Surveillance is another issue that is an intrusion in the work place A few of the technological advances for surveillance include miniature cameras smart ID badges and random screen pictures The smart ID badges are used to track an employees movements around a building 60 Employers also monitor communication and online activities of their employees an example for a continuous surveillance in communication would be call-center workers A call-center worker is controlled
