In chapter 2 of Finding Darwins God Miller argues that scientific knowledge is valid and reliable by stating that things that happened in the past can be known by science and that evolution is both a fact and theory The first argument he made is that we can actually know the past without direct witness by using the examples of detecting crimes by tracing the remains that criminals left understanding the sun and learning the structural change of metal cans This is followed by an important core scientific methodology scientific materialism which states that all things can be understood by their material properties In other words the past is linked to the present by matter So we can actually know what happened in the past by studying the remains of the past or things from the subject being analyzed such as the electromagnetic radiation from the sun and the garbage Miller used three examples to support the indirect approach of discovering new things each of which is very effective under the scientific materialism If all things are related to each other through matter only then in particular we can certainly draw conclusions from what scientists studied from the radiation of the sun that comes to the earth because the radiation is matter directly from the sun So studying the properties of the radiation is equivalent to knowing the properties of the sun We cannot know the past unless things cannot be explained by material properties That is the miraculous explanation which states that all natural phenomena are beyond human understanding and investigation and was rejected by the author because there is no purpose of knowing anything at all and most importantly scientific materialism works demonstrated in the discoveries of the sun which mythology fails to explain In experiments the exact same conditions were created which cannot fall into the miraculous explanation plausibly In addition
