Explore how Frayn portrays Barbara BerrillFrayn initially reveals little about Barbara Berrill at the start of the novel during conversations between her and Stephen and Keith Her personality only begins to be revealed in the conversations between her and Stephen later in the novel Between pages 96-100 Barbara begins to talk to Stephen and initiates the conversation She approaches him I knew you were playing on your own says Barbara Berrill She is portrayed as confident as she continues to try and talk to Stephen even though he acted hostile towards her earlier Frayn has presented her as inquisitive and curious through use of the stative verb knew The fact that this is in the past tense also suggests that she has been observing Stephen emphasizing the curiosity in her nature The reader also becomes aware of the innocents and youth portrayed as she describes Stephen as playing use of this childlike lexis reminds the reader of the young age of Barbara but she is portrayed to have knowledge in her youth She just realised that my ignorance goes deeper than a matter of spelling she had realised something about Stephen and this stative verb connotes that she is quickly able to understand a situation but the reader knows that it was in fact Keith that wrote the incorrect sign This portrays Barbara as having gaps in her knowledge even if she presents herself as confident and knowledgeable but Stephen eventually knows and understands more of the events happening around The Close But she still feels she is able to taunt Stephen about his apparent lack of knowledge that he has in her eyes You dont know she taunts Frayn has used this exclamatory to connote Barbaras dominance and confidence in herself She tries to aggravate Stephen by saying these remarks Frayn has made her the agenda setter throughout their conversation continuing the portrayal of confidence and dominance in her personality She taunts
