The book The Road by Cormac McCarthy centers around the lives of aman and his son a young boy as they journey through a world that iswithering slowly A world where food is growing scarce humans areforced to conform to cannibalism the planet itself is dying and allhope for survival or a resurgence of stability for Earth is goneFrom reading The Road I gathered there is absolute no hope for Earthyet the man and the boy fight to survive in a world where death isinevitable While some people in the novel such as the boys motherchooses suicide the boy and the man along with very few others continueto fight to survive rather than ending their struggle by committingsuicide The novel raised two questions for me one is what would drivea person to commit suicide and also what would drive a person to stay alive and continue fighting something that has no hope of being changedSuicide is the human act of self-inflicted self-intentioned deathLeenaars 131 In The Road the woman who served as both the manswife and the boys mother committed suicide and I believe this wasbecause she no longer wanted to keep suffering through trying to survivein a world where women are getting stolen and raped people are beingkidnaped and eaten I believe she felt she knew she would die anyway sowhy not do it now then wait and be killed later Plus I feel she knewit would be easier for the man and the boy if they did not have anotherperson to look after or support There would be more food for them sincethey would not have to share with herA few major factors of suicide are depression and substance abuseSince food and life is non-abundant it is likely people are notcommitting suicide due to their abuse of drugs or alcohol Nowdepression may be the primary factor in contributing to the idea ofsuicide amongst the people in the book The RoadIn a dying world
