After reading the story Connie would most definitely be considered around character Round character means a character who encountersconflict and is changed by it As the main character of this storyConnie experiences conflict in that her familys expectations of her areto be simpleand less self conscious Her mother expresses her displeasure in howConnieworries about her looks more than she worries about the more importantaspectsof her development Cheever1964 p 381Connie is very much a representative character of many of the youngteenage girls in todays societyHer concerns are of how she is viewed and is constantly worried abouthow she looks to others Additionally she breaks free from theconstraints of a very strict family by changing her appearanceattitude and demeanor once she leaves the house She uses the fact thather mother approves of her sisters after hours activities with herfriends to escape across a highway to a diner where she knows her familywould not approve In the beginning of the story the towns description is very much asyou would find in many small towns across America Everything from thehigh school the kids go to the diner which the kids like to hang outConnie spends time going out with her friends and meeting boys She isbeing sneaky by going into the alley with a boy What girls have alwaysdone and are continuing to this dayFrom the beginning Connie seems to be a normal pretty young girl whoenjoys getting by with her good looks She clearly has some frictionwith her family which isnt out of the ordinaryof a teenage girl It wasnt until she goes to the diner that her truenature starts to be expressed It was here she begins to show her desireto break free and flaunt herself to the boys at the diner Even thesimple situation where she goes to eat with Eddie seems normal untilthe situation where she goesinto the alley where she apparently has sex with him While they dontsay they actually had sex on page
