Many people say that their actions define who they are In some cases it defines their family as a whole In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne Pearl is always associated with Hesters sins Although she does act disobedient and immature to Hester at times Hawthorne characterizes Pearl as a blessing to her mother because her duality contrasts the judgmental point of view organized Puritan religion has which treats Pearl as an embodiment of Hesters past adultery with the view of Mother Nature where God forgives Hester and blesses her with Pearl as a protectorA common idea in the Puritan society of the novel is that Pearl is the embodiment of Hesters sins Hawthorne criticizes organized Puritan religion continuously throughout the novel by giving his unbiased perspective on the societys ideas about Pearl Hawthorne mainly criticizes how controlling Puritanism is He believes that Puritans use false judgment supposedly the judgment of God to control people and bend society to fit their ideals A prime example of this in the novel is when Hester and Pearl are walking down the street and the little children call Pearl a likeness of the scarlet letter and they tease her because they were taught that she is a devil-child 70 After being released Hester dwells over the fact that she has not only ruined her life but her childs as well because the young and pure would be taught to look at her as the figure the body the reality of sin 54 Hawthorne criticizes Puritan society by mocking the fact that their children are taught false information about people because their parents are forced to fit into society and hate whoever the Puritan leaders want them to hate Puritan societys pressure had even gotten to Hester as she could not help questioning whether Pearl was a human child 63 Hester is stuck with Pearl forever as Puritan societys teachings refuse Pearl from growing up with friends
