Fantasy novels are a place to escape from reality and let the imagination of the human mind transport oneself to a magical place The Hobbit 1937 by JRR Tolkien one of the best fantasy novels of all time does just that In this story Bilbo Baggins the hobbit goes on an extraordinary quest with the company of a wizard and thirteen dwarves The wizard Gandalf is an important character because he always seems to be there when he is needed the most Elrond the leader of the elves at Rivendell is also a critical character because he gives Bilbo and the group helpful advice Another character that is important is Beorn without his hospitality the mission would have been nearly impossible This quest is much like the ones the Greek Heros once took In Greek Mythology the hero had phases in the journey one that is evident in The Hobbit is the phase destiny Through the aid from powerful creatures Bilbo is able to fulfill his adventure Gandalf is the reason why Bilbo Baggins was part of the adventurous journey Gandalf believed that there was something special about Bilbo and therefore helped the hobbit and the dwarves stay alive To begin with in chapter two Bilbo came across three trolls that wanted to roast the dwarves and It was the wizards voice that had kept the trolls bickering and quarrelling until the light came and made an end of them pg 41 From this moment the reader can infer that Gandalf will be there to come to the rescue Again in chapter four Gandalf saves the adventures from goblins when he took out his sword again and again it flashed in the dark by itself now it was bright as blue flame for delight in the killing of the great lord of the cave pg 63 The reader learns that Gandalf puts his safety at risk in order to protect the travelers Lastly in chapter
