Dramatic structure is what gives the play meaning and understanding It can also be known as the plot of a playstory it gives a play a beginning middle and end Without dramatic structure a play would be all over the place and would not be able to get across the playwrights theme or in general the story Understanding a plays dramatic structure means you understand at least the basic plot Dramatic structure includes introduction rising actions climax falling actions resolution and conclusion Desire Under the Elms by Eugene ONeil has a very distinct dramatic structure To discuss the dramatic structure of Desire Under the Elms one has to describe each section of the structureThe introduction of a play is to introduce the characters learn exposition set the stage and revelation of the situation Often the introduction starts the show and ends with the point of attack of the play For Desire Under the Elms the introduction includes a lot of action The introduction starts with setting the scene explaining that the play takes place in summer 1850 and takes place in a house and yard of farm The two-brothers Simeon and Peter middle aged farmers are introduced and have a conversation about moving to California where gold is everywhere Eben the stepbrother joins the conversation As they talk we learn exposition or information not covered in the action of the play but told by characters The father Cabot has left for two months Ebens mother had owned the land and when she died after Cabot worked her to death Cabot took the land The brothers then argue over who would get the land if Cabot passed away Eben says it should be inherited to him because it was originally his mothers The next morning Eben informs the brothers that their father has married a young woman and they will be coming home soon Then Eben convinces the brothers to sign off on a paper giving
