John Steinbecks novel The Grapes of Wrath follows the Joad familys journey to California during the Great Depression and the Dustbowl This novel shows the structure of the family and the community by emphasizing the unfaltering sense of togetherness within the migrant community as well as the contrasting aspect of thinking only of ones survival and disregarding everyone elses Steinbeck uses the oppositional themes of family community and self-interest to emphasize the Joads and other migrants struggle to provide a better life for themselvesThe theme of family is ever present throughout the novel and it exemplifies the cohesiveness found in the Joad family For example when Tom comes home after he was paroled and Pa tells him that Your Ma got a bad feelin she aint never gonna see you no more She got that quiet look like when somebody died Almost she dont want to go to California fear shell never see you no more Steinbeck 72 She values her family and it is important to her that they stay together When she sees Tom she is overjoyed because she is glad that her son is back Another example of this sense of the family staying together is when Rose of Sharon is explaining to Ma how she and Connie are going to live in the city and buy a house and For a moment a little worry came on Mas face Aint you gonna stay with us--- with the family Ma suddenly seemed to know it was all a dream 164-165 Ma instantly becomes worried when Rose of Sharon tells her that they are thinking of separating from the family She becomes relaxed again when she realizes it was what they were hoping for but it most likely wont happen The family staying together is very important It is their way of coping with the loss of their land and being out on the road and starving They need each other to be
