Pointillism is the theory or practice in art of applying small strokes or dots of color to a surface so that from a distance they blend together Merriam np A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte was created with the technique of pointillism However to be able to perceive this artwork one must stand from a distance so the dots blend together Up close the only thing that shows up is a bunch of random dots Similar to this To Kill A Mockingbird was basically created the same way From a series of short stories Harper Lee strung them together and created a novel Some may not perceive the importance of the episodes being in the story The only way to discover what has been created is to take a step back and put the puzzle pieces together Harper Lee started out with a chain of short stories but she took a step farther in developing something greater Harper Lee showed the short stories she had written about her childhood experiences to a literary agent who suggested that she consider going a step further by weaving the stories into a novel the transformation of the stories into a novel was not immediately successful Murray pg 1-2 Murray used this evidence to support the claim that the books structure remains episodic rather than linear However Murray may have not noticed what Harper Lee was trying to show in the book Throughout the book there were many symbolisms involved One episode from the story when Jem tells Scout not to kill the roly-poly is an example of one Dont do that Scout Set him out on the back steps Jem are you crazy I said set him out on the back steps Sighing I scooped up the small creature placed him on the bottom step and went back to my cot Why couldnt I smash him I asked Because they dont bother
