Spirituality is an ever-growing part of a persons life A persons spirituality often matures with the person themselves as they grow older and start to realize the things that truly matter as opposed to the things that do not People with a sense of spirituality understand that material possessions and certain social status do not bring true happiness while being connected to friends and family on a deeper level do Unfortunately the lack of spirituality in the Roaring twenties depicted in F Scott Fitzgeralds novel and Baz Luhrmanns film The Great Gatsby is still relevant in its modern teachings of its dire consequences most notably in the superficial pursuit of wealth shallow relationships and hedonism The Roaring twenties were a time of high stock prices and the growing need of material possessions Wealth became one of the focal points of this time and influenced social changes in a negative way In The Great Gatsby F Scott Fitzgerald makes this clear in the ways he describes the locations in the book as well as the characters themselves The East Egg is one of the most prestigious locations in the book The people who live in the East Egg are known to be of old money making them some of the most elite characters in the book The characters Jordan and Tom and Daisy Buchanan live here Basic traits these characters share are that they are judgmental and destructive in their thoughts and actions These characters are respected due to their social background this is seen when Nick and Jay Gatsby go to tea at the Buchanans and comments on Daisys charming affect she has on people Shes got an indiscreet voice I remarked Its full of- I hesitatedHer voice is full of money he said suddenly Fitzgerald 115 Across from East Egg is the less fashionable West Egg The West Egg is known to be of new money the characters that live here
