The Jacksonite Guardians -- Nelson Loza Andrew Jackson reigned as the seventh president from 1828 to 1836 The time period during the 1820s and 1830s has since been known as the Jacksonian Era With a forceful and violent personality Jackson continues to provoke controversy among many historians They see in him reflections of both the best and worst tendencies for the nation Jackson was a bad tempered Indian fighter who won his way into office because he took over Florida for the United States and he defended New Orleans successfully However there is more to the seventh president of the United States than he is given credit for Jackson strengthened the power of the presidency which still has an influence on the government to this day The Jacksonian Democrats were guardians of the US Constitution economic opportunity political democracy but not of individual liberty or equality Jackson proclaimed himself as a guardian of the US Constitution and he was He vetoed the bank charter because he felt that the changes put forth would not be compatible with justice sound policy or with the Constitution Document B Jackson doubted the constitutionality of the bank being the strict constitutionalist that he was in addition the his personal disliking of the bank He was also the first president to fully utilize the powers of the executive branch and establish it as equal if not superior to the rest President Jackson used his power to veto twelve times which exceeds the amount of vetoes given by all of his predecessors combined and angered many who opposed him Document C One of the Jacksonian Democrat attempts to reduce the influence of the rich and thereby expand the economic opportunity was by vetoing the charter to the Bank of the United States Jackson stated his reasons in Document B mainly as a precaution of the rich Northeners taking over and bending the acts of government to their selfish purposes Jackson
