Throughout history the same cultural values have been honored This is evident in the Anglo-Saxon time period and in todays society Beowulf demonstrates the Anglo-Saxons cultural value which are similar to todays cultural values In Beowulf the Anglo-Saxons strongly believed in courage fame and loyalty Beowulf demonstrated courage when he was speaking to Hrothgar about Grendel and proclaimed I have heard too that the monsters scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none Nor will I Beowulf lines 166-169 Beowulf has never seen Grendel fight but yet he is brave enough to fight him without any weapons The cultural value courage is important during the 6th century because courage made the individual more heroic and thus more admired Fame is an honored Anglo-Saxon cultural trait and this is illustrated when Beowulf says Have the brave Geats build me a tomb high on this spit of land so sailors can see this tower and remember my name and call it Beowulfs tower lines 809 815 Beowulf after everything he has accomplished wants his name and his legacy to be remembered Fame is important to the Anglo-Saxons because fame is proof that the individual was of high authority A big part of the Anglo-Saxon culture is loyalty and this is visible when Beowulf describes his swimming match with Brecca and he informs He could never leave me behind swim faster across the waves than I could and I had chosen to remain close to his side lines 274-276 Although Beowulf is clearly stronger than Brecca he stays by Breccas side for as long as he can which demonstrates his loyalty Loyalty is important to the Anglo-Saxons because it shows that someone is always there to help out and in return for helping they will often receive riches Courage fame and loyalty are cultural values that
