1 Revisionist Criticism History has shown that the events of the present effect how people look at the past This was the case when revisionist thinking in the United States that was becoming popular during the Vietnam War The revisionist thinkers challenged the accepted conventional views that were held up to that time about the origins of the Cold War Their main point of contention was who was to blame for the start of the Cold War Instead of the blaming the Soviet Union like the traditionalists did they blamed the Americans The Vietnam War did a lot to change the way the people felt about their government The people were now more skeptical of their government then ever before There were many reasons for the growing distrust of the government by the people One reason was due to the fact that the people didnt believe the leaders in Washington when they said that the United States was winning the war This became especially clear after the Tet offensive in 1968 Although it was a tactical victory for the United States it was a strategic victory for the North Vietnamese The North Vietnamese showed that they had enough strength to launch coordinated attacks all across South Vietnam This surprised the American people who were led to believe by their government that the war was going well and that the end was near While there were anti-war protest in the United States before the Tet offensive after the battle their numbers grew dramatically There were many more people who now saw no reason to keep fighting in Vietnam Many people began to question more than ever why the United States was supporting a corrupt and incapable South Vietnamese government The secret bombing of Cambodia by President Nixon also added to the mood of distrust in the government and its policies Up until the Vietnam War there were only a few people thought that the Americans
